Our Home Educating Lives

Blossom's Family

Home Education to us is a lifestyle choice. We instinctively have a thirst for knowledge and firmly believe that learning is all around us. We focus on child and interest-led activities that allow a child to learn in the way that works best for them. We call it “Whole Life Learning”.

How our home education style supports our child to thrive.

Our daughter’s school experience was traumatic to say the least, she suffered through experiences that would cause an adult to suffer lasting mental health issues and we are so proud of the way she is dealing with everything. Being trauma aware we knew anything that resembled school too closely would be a trigger for her so we have had to think outside the box and find activities that promote learning in a different way.

We have only been home educating for just short of a year now, and our biggest regret is not taking this path from the start. We are adept at finding the hidden learning in even mundane tasks, constantly feeding into her thirst for information and her striving for independence. Even the medical professionals we have encountered (we have never made a secret of our educational status) have been impressed by the few scenes they have witnessed. To us this is what education should look like.

A glimpse into our home educating lives...

Our days are mixed and varied, but at the heart of our approach is an appreciation for simple hygge living. Rainy days find us at home, reading, cooking, exploring art, experimenting with crafts, watching documentaries on YouTube and exploring our thoughts and observations through discussion and connection. When the sun shines we like to head out on nature walks and day trips, exploring the whole of the UK, not just our local area.

Even mundane tasks are turned into educational experiences, reading nutrition labels and comparing products at the grocery store to ensure we get the best value for our money, learning about the many career options out there from people we encounter on day trips to zoos, farms, museums etc.

Our favourite days are in the summer when we pack up our tent and head to our favourite, nearly wild campsite to live under canvas. On these trips we use compost toilets (and learn about how they work), cook over an open fire, drink water from natural springs and hand wash clothing. Electricity is limited to just the charging of mobile phones, used simply as digital cameras. We take the time to explore the many rivers, waterfalls, mountains and beaches we come across, turning each into a new and exciting lesson. Farming and agriculture is also covered, even though we live in a city area most of the time. No two days are ever the same for us.

Our approach is about appreciating what history and the past has to teach us, whilst still remaining knowledgeable on current and new technologies. We are unbound by classroom walls, and our only limit is that of our imaginations. We value what nature and experience has to teach us, and promote the early development of independence skills.
